What Do Gear Pumps Do?

What Are The Two Types Of Gear Pump?

There are two main types of gear pump which are commonly used across the world. These are:

  • External Gear Pumps – These models rely on two external spur gears to displace liquid and ensure that it flows throughout the hydraulic system.
  • Internal Gear Pumps – These designs use both internal and external spur gears to move the hydraulic fluid.

Both of these kinds of gear pumps rely on the principles of positive displacement, sometimes known as fixed displacement, which means that they move a consistent amount of fluid for every revolution,

How Do Hydraulic Gear Pumps Work?

As the gears rotate, they separate on the intake side of the pump, which then creates a void within the pump. This void is quickly filled with fluid thanks to the high levels of pressure present within the system. The fluid is then carried by the gears to the discharging side of the components, where the meshing of the gears then displaces the fluid and allows it to move throughout the hydraulic system.

Thanks to the extremely narrow mechanical clearances between the gears, and the speed at which they rotate, the hydraulic fluid is never given the opportunity to leak backwards into the pump from the discharge point, and has no option but to move forward. Thanks to their durable design, most gear pumps can deal with a range of high pressures and even highly viscous fluids.

In the past, gear pumps have been criticised for being fairly loud within a hydraulic system, but modern designs are able to operate much more smoothly and quietly. Similarly, thanks to their simplistic design, there is little to go wrong with these gear pumps that could ever result in catastrophic failure. If these components are going to break, then they are simply going to be much less productive and will eventually wear down until their flow rate becomes much weaker than before.

They are a great option for those situations where a regular flow is required throughout the system, or for systems which are going to operate on a long-term basis such as many industrial models.
