Electromagnetic Clutches for Hydraulic Pumps
Flowfit electromagnetic clutches provide a reliable way to engage and disengage hydraulic pumps using an electrical signal. Available in 12V and 24V configurations, they allow the pump to operate only when hydraulic power is required.
These electrically operated clutches are commonly used in marine equipment, commercial vehicles, mobile hydraulic systems and air-conditioning units. Typical applications include boats, fishing vessels, refuse collection vehicles and other machinery requiring controlled hydraulic pump operation.
How an Electromagnetic Clutch Works
When electrical current is supplied to the clutch coil, it generates a magnetic field that attracts the armature towards the rotor. The resulting friction transfers rotational power from the drive system to the hydraulic pump.
When the electrical supply is removed, the clutch disengages and stops transmitting power to the pump. This provides convenient on-demand control without needing to stop the engine or drive system.
Common Applications
- Marine hydraulic systems
- Boats and fishing vessels
- Refuse collection and waste-management vehicles
- Commercial and specialist vehicles
- Mobile hydraulic power systems
- Vehicle and industrial air-conditioning units
- Auxiliary hydraulic pumps
- Equipment requiring electrically controlled pump engagement
Benefits of Electromagnetic Clutches
- On-demand pump operation: Engage the hydraulic pump only when hydraulic power is required.
- Rapid engagement: Provides responsive connection between the drive system and pump.
- Electrical control: Can be operated using a switch, relay or compatible control system.
- Reduced unnecessary operation: Allows the pump to remain disengaged when it is not in use.
- 12V and 24V options: Suitable for a range of vehicle, marine and mobile equipment electrical systems.
- Compact installation: Designed for applications where space and weight may be limited.
Choosing the Correct Electromagnetic Clutch
The clutch must be compatible with the hydraulic pump, drive arrangement and electrical system of the equipment. Check the following specifications before ordering:
- Operating voltage: Select either 12V or 24V to match the electrical system.
- Maximum torque: Must be sufficient for the torque required to drive the hydraulic pump.
- Maximum speed: The clutch must be suitable for the intended operating speed.
- Shaft and bore dimensions: Must match the pump and drive connection.
- Mounting arrangement: Confirm the fixing dimensions and available installation space.
- Pulley or drive configuration: Check compatibility with the existing belt or drive system.
- Operating environment: Consider exposure to moisture, contamination, vibration and temperature.
Selection note: Always confirm the voltage, torque requirement, rotational speed, shaft dimensions and mounting arrangement before ordering an electromagnetic clutch.
12V and 24V Electromagnetic Clutches
A 12V clutch is typically used on equipment with a 12V electrical system, while a 24V clutch is commonly selected for larger commercial vehicles, marine equipment and industrial machinery with a 24V supply.
The clutch voltage must match the equipment power supply. Using an incompatible voltage may prevent correct operation or damage the clutch coil.
