Precision Control: Our Top Log Splitter Valves Explained

Log splitter valves control the oil flow that extends and retracts your splitter cylinder—directly affecting splitting speed, smoothness, and reliability. Use this guide to understand what they do, why they matter, and how to choose the correct valve by flow (LPM), pressure (PSI), and port sizing.

What are log splitter valves?

Log splitter valves are hydraulic control valves specifically designed for log splitters. They regulate the flow of hydraulic fluid to control the movement of the hydraulic cylinder, which pushes the log against the splitting wedge. These valves are essential for ensuring smooth and efficient operation, allowing users to control the splitting force and cycle speed.

Why are they important?

A high-quality log splitter valve ensures reliable performance, smooth operation, and increased efficiency. Choosing the right valve depends on the log splitter’s power, cylinder size, and intended use.

Quick note

A valve that’s too small can restrict flow (slow cycle times), while a valve with insufficient pressure rating can reduce durability. Aim to match flow to your pump and choose a pressure rating above your system maximum.

How to choose the right log splitter valve

1) Flow rate (LPM – Litres Per Minute)

The flow rate of your hydraulic pump determines the speed of the cylinder. Match the valve’s LPM rating to your pump for optimal performance:

  • Up to 42 LPM – For small to mid-size log splitters.
  • 42–60 LPM – Ideal for medium-duty log splitters.
  • 60–95+ LPM – Best for high-performance or commercial-grade log splitters.

2) Pressure rating (PSI – Pounds Per Square Inch)

Ensure the valve can handle the hydraulic system’s maximum pressure. Most log splitter systems operate at 2,500–3,500 PSI. Choosing a valve with a rating above your system’s max pressure helps ensure durability.

3) Auto-kick out feature

Many log splitter valves feature an automatic return detent. A detent function allows the cylinder to retract automatically after splitting, increasing efficiency and reducing fatigue—especially when doing repeated cycles.

4) Port size compatibility

Check the valve’s inlet and outlet port sizes to ensure they match your hydraulic hoses and system fittings and don’t compromise system flow rate. Pay special attention to return flow during cylinder retraction. Common sizes are 3/4" BSP.

What log splitter valves are available at Flowfit?

TYPE INLET/OUTLET PORTS WORKING PORTS MAX FLOW (LPM) MAX PRESSURE (PSI) RELIEF VALVE KICK OFF PRESSURE
COMPACT 3/4" BSP 1/2" BSP 81 3265 (225 BAR) Adjustable, preset at 2,750 PSI (189 BAR) Non-adjustable, preset at 800 PSI (55 BAR)
EVOLUTION 3/4" BSP 1/2" BSP 136 3625 (230 BAR) Adjustable, preset at 2,250 PSI (155 BAR) Non-adjustable, preset at 800 PSI (55 BAR)
CLASSIC 3/4" BSP 1/2" BSP 113 2750 (189 BAR) Adjustable, preset at 2,250 PSI (155 BAR) Adjustable from 1000–2600 PSI (179 BAR), preset at 1400 PSI (96 BAR)

Which one should I choose?

  • Compact: great all-round option for many builds where 81 LPM max flow is suitable.
  • Evolution: best when you need higher flow capacity (up to 136 LPM).
  • Classic: strong choice for many setups, plus an adjustable kick-off pressure range.
